Abstract

This study aims to describe reading habits and reading skills in elementary school students at SD Negeri Cipasung. This research is a mix method research (qualitative & quantitative) using descriptive method. The research object under study is the habit of fond of reading and reading ability in elementary school students. The subjects in this study were students of class IV at SD Negeri Cipasung which is located in Cipasung Village, Kec. Darma Kab. Brass Prov. West Java. Data collection techniques include observation, documentation, interviews, questionnaires and reading ability tests. Observations were used to find out about the conditions of the research site, documentation was used to collect data or take pictures at the research location, while interviews, questionnaires and reading ability tests were used to collect data and information related to reading habits and reading ability in students. The results obtained in this study are: (1) The role of the teacher in creating a habit of liking reading in elementary school students is good. The efforts that have been made by teachers to improve literacy culture include asking students to read books at home and creating several programs or activities in schools that support the literacy movement. (2) From the results of processing the questionnaire sheet data, it shows that the fourth grade students of SD Negeri Cipasung are in the moderate category with an average score of 62. Therefore, it is necessary to have factors that can encourage students to be more fond of reading, these factors Among them are: high curiosity, adequate physical environment, conducive social environment, thirst for information, and the principle of life that reading is a spiritual necessity. (3) In the Rubik's assessment of students' reading ability, an average score of 95 is in the very good category. This is of course inseparable from factors that influence reading ability including intellectual factors and psychological factors.
