Abstract

Public speaking skills are an important aspect in early childhood language development that needs to be stimulated early. The results of initial observations at Ewi Masyithoh 03 Sarimulyo Kindergarten showed that out of 14 children, 8 were still less confident in appearing in front of the class and 10 children were not yet able to speak clearly and convey ideas coherently. This condition indicates that children's public speaking skills have not yet developed optimally. This study aims to examine the role of the storytelling method in developing the public speaking skills of children aged 5-6 years. This study used a qualitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design using the Kurt Lewin model which was implemented in 2 cycles. The subjects were 14 children in group B. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study indicate that the application of the storytelling method can gradually improve children's public speaking skills. In cycle I, there was an increase in the aspects of courage to appear in front of the class and self-confidence. In cycle II, all aspects experienced an increase, indicated by an increase in courage to appear in front of the class, self-confidence, clarity of speech, and the ability to convey ideas coherently. Thus, the storytelling method can be used as an effective and meaningful learning strategy in developing the public speaking skills of early childhood.
