Abstract

The background of this research is the limited intelligence possessed by mild intellectually disabled students (tunagrahita) at the SLB Negeri in Tasikmalaya City, which can lead to a decrease in the level of independence in these children. This study aims to determine the correlation between parental support and the level of independence of tunagrahita mild children at the the SLB Negeri in Tasikmalaya City. The research design is descriptive correlational with a cross-sectional approach. The population used in this study consists of 65 narasumberts who are children with mild intellectual disabilities, selected using the total sampling technique. The research findings from the 65 narasumberts show that the majority of them have good parental support (36 or 55.4%) and the level of independence among mild tunagrahita children is as follows: independent (20 or 30.8%), mild dependence (18 or 27.7%), moderate dependence (10 or 15.4%), and severe dependence (17 or 26.2%). Based on the Chi-square test, the relationship between parental support and the level of independence has a p-value of 0.000, less than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between parental support and the level of independence among tunagrahita children. It is recommended that the school assists in increasing parental support to help children become more independent.
